Crossing the threshold: the door in the film

The symbolic meaning of the door

At first glance, doors play a subordinate role in the film. Although they are often seen, they are rarely perceived as important elements of the plot. The viewer takes doors for granted. And this is precisely where the film's strength lies.

On closer inspection, it becomes clear that doors are actually central elements. Because as part of the scenery, they play more of a leading role. Even without actors, emotions and moods are conveyed on the film set through the set design alone. Doors are often space-defining elements that stand out simply because of their size and play a key role in determining the aesthetics of the picture through their design and function.

As portals to other worlds, as a safe place from danger or as part of a larger backdrop, doors become an important element of the plot.

As a physical barrier, doors often reflect the emotional relationships of the protagonists. They are used to emphasise the relationships and circumstances of the various characters. Above all, interaction with the door is a frequent stylistic device here. If it is opened particularly slowly, this indicates to the audience possible difficulties between the characters - for example, hostility or mistrust. If access is denied, this action also symbolises the characters' dislike of each other. And a slamming door expresses anger and annoyance through its sound alone.

The appropriate mood and atmosphere is emphasised by the targeted use of lighting and scenery.

A door that has remained in the memory of many people: In the second "Harry Potter" film, Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione solve the mystery surrounding the Chamber of Secrets, which is hidden behind this door. The eye-catching door design and the snake-shaped decorations already give a hint of the threat waiting for Harry behind the door. He later fights a snake-like creature there.

The mechanism of the door to the Chamber of Secrets also picks up on the snake motif that runs through the film of the same name. The door can only be opened by communicating in a special language with snake-like hissing sounds. The door to the chamber is also a separating element in the plot. The climax of the film begins when the threshold of the door is crossed and the final showdown is initiated. The passage through this door is the peak of the suspense curve. The audience knows that the finale is just around the corner.

Small, colourful, rustic - circular doors in "Lord of the Rings"

Just like their inhabitants, the hobbits' doors in the Lord of the Rings films are small and round. As approximately one metre tall, human-like creatures, the hobbits do not need particularly large doors.

Adapted to their surroundings, the circular, low doors together with the architecture of the houses reflect the characteristics of the hobbits. These doors are simply perfect for the quiet and cosy folk with a preference for food of all kinds. The colour scheme of the backdrop with cheerful tones and natural materials also creates a pleasant atmosphere. The doors subconsciously convey a positive attitude towards the hobbits to the audience.

The threshold between life and death

In horror films, doors represent both salvation and doom. Will the protagonist manage to escape the threat behind a door in time? Or is something even worse waiting behind the door?

Heroes' struggles for survival are often staged by escaping through a long corridor, at the end of which supposed safety awaits behind the door. On the way to the door, a character then fights for their life, while the distance to the door is constantly shown through skilful camera angles.

A frequent stylistic device is the contrast between visuals and action. An inconspicuous-looking door often conceals new and worse horrors.

Particularly in supernatural horror films, the door acts as protection against evil creatures. Vampires, for example, are denied entry through them, as these creatures cannot cross doorsteps without an invitation.
