Centre positions: What is the function of the inside of a door?

Doors from GARANT are available in many different styles and materials. Some doors also have special functions. Interestingly, what they can do depends to a large extent on their inner workings. The inner structure of a door, the centre layer, determines in particular the weight, load-bearing capacity and sound insulation behaviour. At GARANT, we have the right centre layer for every requirement: honeycomb, tubular chipboard or solid chipboard. You can find out what is behind the three centre layers here.

Honeycomb centre layer

Honeycomb centre layers

The honeycomb centre layer was inspired by nature. The paper moulded meshes are reminiscent of the structure of honeycombs. At just 12.0 kg/m², a standard door with honeycomb inlay is a real flyweight. Thanks to its special shape, it does not have to compromise on stability.

Doors with honeycomb centre panels are cost-saving and suitable for simple use without any special loads. These doors are stable, but can only withstand punctual impacts to a certain extent.

Tubular chip centre layer

Tubular chipboard centre layers

This inner layer utilises the stability of a chipboard panel. Empty tubes are pressed horizontally into the panel using the extrusion process. These recesses make the tubular chipboard doors lighter. The standard weight of a door of this type is approx. 16.0 kg/m². At the same time, the construction ensures enormous pressure stability. Doors with tubular chipboard inner layers are perfect for a family home.

We always recommend tubular chipboard middle layers in the living area. The door surface appears very smooth and calm.

Solid chipboard centre layer

Solid chipboard centre layers

The extremely stable solid chipboard centre layer consists entirely of solid chipboard. To produce this, shredded wood chips are pressed together with glue under high pressure. This makes doors with a solid chipboard centre layer heavier (standard: approx. 21.5 kg/m²), but at the same time highly resilient. For this reason, we recommend solid chipboard doors mainly in areas where they are subject to heavy use. This is the case in larger building complexes, schools or hospitals, for example.

Due to its particularly high stability, the solid chipboard centre layer is installed in our functional doors, e.g. in soundproof doors. However, it is also the stable basis for all doors with light cut-outs.
