Green interior design with sustainable colours

What makes sustainable wall paints

The topic of sustainability is becoming increasingly important. A wide variety of economic sectors and industries are increasingly thinking green. Renewable raw materials are also important for house construction. For example, wooden façades with the PEFC and FSC® seal or insulation material made from cellulose or hemp are particularly effective.

However, sustainability does not end with the construction of houses, but also continues inside. There are now a wide range of environmentally friendly alternatives - including in interior design. These include sustainable wall paints, which are recyclable and protect the environment and your own health. Here we show you what these paints are made of and how you can recognise them.

Conventional wall paints often contain ingredients that are harmful to the environment and health, such as preservatives, solvents or binding agents. The sustainable alternatives are solvent-free and based on natural ingredients. They do not emit any harmful substances and can be used indoors without hesitation.

Silicate base

A popular form of sustainable wall paint is silicate-based. Silicateis a mineral that contains quartz sand and potassium silicate. Silicate is created by melting quartz sand and baking soda. Silicate paint adheres particularly well to concrete, lime and plaster. This ecological wall paint covers very well and is scrub-resistant. Thanks to its breathable properties, it prevents mould growth caused by moisture. Silicate paints are also suitable for allergy sufferers.

Schöner Wohnenuses silicate skilfully in its "Naturell" product line. The paint has been awarded the Blue Angel andECARF (European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation) certificates.

The young DIY companyHorst from Hamburg also uses silicate as a base for its vegan private-label wall paints. To protect the environment, each colour can even be tested as a wall sticker at home. Horst will send you the stickers in the desired colours on request. The stickers stick to any wall and can be removed without leaving any residue. This service saves you unnecessary delivery journeys and the products do not end up in the rubbish.

Clay base

Clay is another ecological base for wall paints and is suitable for all interior surfaces. It covers very well, is breathable and easy to use. The base for clay paint can simply be mixed with water. This enables sustainable packaging. The colour powder is often sold in simple paper bags. This is also how the young brand Nen-do does it

Water-based

The product range fromFarrow & Ball product range is water-based and contains no preservatives or solvents. Since 2010, the manufacturer has adapted its formulation so that the wall paints can no longer release any harmful vapours into the interior. Farrow & Ball also completely dispenses with animal testing. In addition, all but two of the wall paints are vegan.

Holistically sustainable room concepts

In interior design, there are many products and brands that focus on sustainability. So do we: PRÜM doors are made from sustainable wood. The raw material comes from controlled, sustainable and local forestry. This means that our raw materials do not travel long distances and grow back. This is very important to us and our doors have been awarded the ECO Institute label and the PEFCand FSC® seal.
