The Alte Oper Frankfurt is one of Germany's most influential cultural venues: a historic opera house from the 19th century which, following its reopening as a concert and congress centre, delights visitors from all over the world every year with its international programme, outstanding acoustics and impressive architecture.
About the project
The order comprised five double sash XXL fire protection doors, each 4,300 mm high, which were also fitted with a smoke control function. These doors were produced with T30 fire-rated glazing, continuous glassbars and flush glazing beads on both sides, combining both functional and aesthetic requirements. A further 10 double sash and 2 single-sash fire protection doors with a smoke protection function were also fitted with T30 fire-rated glazing, continuous glassbars and panic locks.
The door surfaces were veneered in mahogany and etched according to sample templates, giving the doors an elegant yet traditional appearance.
The particular appeal of this order lay in reconciling new developments in fire protection with the architect’s optical requirements and the conditions imposed by heritage conservation regulations. This required precise and creative execution to preserve the high safety level and the historic and aesthetic ambience.
