Requirements for functional doors at a glance

Doors are referred to as functional doors if, in contrast to normal living room doors (connection between two rooms), they have to fulfil higher requirements.

These higher requirements include, among others

The requirements placed on doors and structural elements are generally verified by tests, some of which are very complex.

The building regulations also stipulate requirements for doors. This is particularly the case when it comes to fire protection or sound insulation. Legislators and accident insurance organisations also place high demands on doors in connection with escape route safety.

Depending on the area of application, radiation protection (e.g. for X-ray rooms), burglary and bullet resistance or accessibility also play an important role. In special buildings, doors must be burglar and break-out resistant, vandalism-proof and/or suicide-proof.

In buildings with a high frequency of use or a high general load, doors are often exposed to particular mechanical loads.

For other building elements such as windows and external doors, the special functions are usually fire and smoke protection as well as burglar resistance or sound insulation. In rare cases, bullet resistance is also added.
