Requirements for functional doors at a glance

Doors are designated as functional doors when, unlike standard interior doors (which connect two rooms), they have to meet more stringent requirements.

These higher requirements include, amongst others:

The requirements placed on doors and building components are generally verified through controls, some of which are highly complex.

Building regulations also impose requirements on doors according to the regulations. This is particularly the case when it comes to fire protection or sound insulation. Legislators and accident insurance providers also impose high standards on doors in connection with escape route safety.

Depending on the area of application, however, radiation protection (e.g. in X-ray rooms), burglary and bullet resistance, or accessibility also play a significant role. In specific buildings, doors must be equipped with burglary and escape resistance, vandalism protection and/or suicide prevention features.

In buildings with high footfall or high general wear and tear, doors are often subjected to particular mechanical loads.

For other building components such as windows and exterior doors, the special functions generally involve fire and smoke protection, as well as burglary resistance or sound insulation. In rare cases, bullet resistance is also required.
