Colours have an effect - this also applies to interior design. Colours not only determine our perception of the environment, but also influence our behaviour. Colours can arouse emotions, affect our mood and, when used correctly, ensure greater productivity and performance. At the same time, they determine the basic mood within a living space and create the right atmosphere. In combination with light and lighting, they unfold their full effect.
Whether in a restaurant, supermarket or hospital - in many areas of public life, we encounter colours that are deliberately used to influence us. So how do we make the best use of colours in interior design and which door goes best with which colour? Find out in our two-part blog post.
Stay cool - cool colours with a calming effect
Shades of blue for more productivity
Ideal for the home office: blue is reminiscent of blue skies or the sea. The colour blue is also often associated with values such as trust, loyalty or truth. In colour psychology, blue has proven to be particularly calming and relaxing. There is a simple reason for this: while the colour red speeds up the metabolism, blue slows it down. The right shades of blue can therefore support work in your own office.
But beware: too many elements in dark shades of blue can have an overwhelming effect and make the room look smaller.
Nature at home: green tones for more cosiness
Nowadays, many people spend significantly more time indoors than outdoors. A study from 2015 came to the conclusion that 85 per cent of daily life takes place indoors. Researchers believe this is the cause of increased stress levels and a greater susceptibility to mental problems. The study investigated the effects that plants and furnishings in natural colours have on people.
The participants in the study who regularly interacted with houseplants had significantly fewer symptoms of stress. It also had a positive effect if their surroundings were designed in natural colours.
This finding is by no means new, but has been used in interior design for thousands of years: Even in ancient Egypt or the ancient city of Pompeii, people designed their living spaces in colour tones that reminded them of nature outside. Plants were also part of the furnishings at this time. Anyone who furnishes their home in natural colours benefits from the advantages and the positive effect on the psyche.
