What are oversized doors?

There is no clear definition. Doors are always considered "oversized" if they:

  • are significantly higher or wider than standard dimensions
  • have an exceptionally high weight
  • have to fulfil special design requirements

Interesting: What is perceived as "large" is also subjective. While a 2.0 m door is standard for many, it may be too low for tall users - and oversized for others.

  • The decisive factor is therefore not just the size, but the requirements in the respective project.

Why are XXL doors in demand today?

In the past, large doors were mainly reserved for prestigious buildings. Today, the focus is on other requirements:

  • open-plan layouts & spacious room concepts
  • barrier-free transitions
  • Architectural design elements
  • High functional requirements (e.g. fire protection)

Modern construction projects are therefore increasingly demanding customised door solutions that go beyond the standard.


The biggest challenge: statics and forces

The larger and heavier a door is, the more forces act on the entire system:

  • Dead weight of the door (leaf weight)
  • Payload due to operation (pulling, pushing)
  • Additional loads (e.g. wind or door closers)

These forces must be permanently absorbed - by

  • the wall
  • the door frame
  • the hinges (hinges)

Important: Even when the door is open at 90°, there must be no sagging or sliding movements.

Practical tip:
A structural engineer should be consulted at an early stage for XXL doors - especially for lightweight wall constructions.


The wall as a decisive factor

While historical doors were often installed in solid walls, lighter construction methods are frequently used today.

The problem:
The wall must reliably absorb all forces and moments.

It is therefore crucial

  • Choose the right fastening systems
  • Check the load-bearing capacity of the wall
  • Plan the installation precisely

Floor unevenness: an underestimated risk factor

Even the slightest unevenness can lead to problems with large doors:

  • Door drags on the floor

  • Door does not close correctly (critical for fire and smoke protection)

The standard clearance is approx. 7 mm floor clearance (±2 mm).

  • Particularly critical: If the floor rises in the swivelling area, the function can be impaired prematurely.

Multifunctional XXL doors: What is possible?

  • The maximum door size depends on the available tests and certificates.

Example:
A very large fire door is possible - but there may be restrictions in combination with burglar resistance.

Priorities must be set - e.g. fire protection before burglary protection.

Door hinges: The key component for XXL doors

The load on the hinges increases with:

  • Door weight
  • Door width
  • Additional components (e.g. door closer)

Rule of thumb from practice:

  • +10 % door width → +10 % load
  • Door closer → +20-25 % additional load
  • Opening restrictor → up to a factor of 1.75

A third hinge can increase the load capacity by approx. 30 %.

  • Important: Standard solutions quickly reach their limits here.


Door closers & accessibility

Traditional door closers often reach their limits with oversized doors.

Possible solutions:

  • Tandem door closers (more force)
  • Automatic swing door drives

But:

  • High closing forces can conflict with accessibility.

Individual planning with manufacturers is crucial here.

Fittings & handle sets: often underestimated

The door handle is the direct point of contact with the user - and is subject to high loads.

This applies to XXL doors:

  • High forces when pulling/pushing
  • Increased load on the lock and fittings

Recommendation:
Use security fittings with long backplate and continuous screw fitting.

Installation: the decisive success factor

Even the best planning is of little use without proper implementation.

What is important:

  • Precise installation (close to zero tolerance)
  • Correct alignment
  • Suitable transport routes (often underestimated!)

Even small errors can lead to functional problems in the long term.

Don't forget maintenance

XXL doors are subject to greater loads than standard doors.

Therefore

  • Schedule regular checks
  • Shorter maintenance intervals
  • Intervene early in the event of problems
