However, the larger a door becomes, the more complex the planning, construction and installation become. In this article, we show you what really matters with oversized interior doors - and how typical problems can be avoided.


What are oversized doors?

There is no clear definition. Doors are always considered "oversized" if they:

  • are significantly higher or wider than standard dimensions
  • have an exceptionally high weight
  • have to fulfil special design requirements

Interesting: What is perceived as "large" is also subjective. While a 2.0 m door is standard for many, it may be too low for tall users - and oversized for others.

  • The decisive factor is therefore not just the size, but the requirements in the respective project.

Why are XXL doors in demand today?

In the past, large doors were mainly reserved for prestigious buildings. Today, the focus is on other requirements:

  • open-plan layouts & spacious room concepts
  • barrier-free transitions
  • Architectural design elements
  • High functional requirements (e.g. fire protection)

Modern construction projects are therefore increasingly demanding customised door solutions that go beyond the standard.


The biggest challenge: statics and forces

The larger and heavier a door is, the more forces act on the entire system:

  • Dead weight of the door (leaf weight)
  • Payload due to operation (pulling, pushing)
  • Additional loads (e.g. wind or door closers)

These forces must be permanently absorbed - by

  • the wall
  • the door frame
  • the hinges (hinges)

Important: Even when the door is open at 90°, there must be no sagging or sliding movements.

Practical tip:
A structural engineer should be consulted at an early stage for XXL doors - especially for lightweight wall constructions.


The wall as a decisive factor

Whilst historic doors were often installed in massive walls, lighter building concepts are frequently used today.

The problem is that
the wall must reliably absorb all powers and moments.

  • choose the right fixing systems
  • test the load-carrying capacity of the wall
  • plan the erection precisely

Floor levelness: an underestimated risk factor

Even the slightest unevenness can cause problems with large doors:

  • Door grinds the floor
  • Door gets stuck
  • Door does not close properly (critical for fire and smoke protection)

The standard clearance is approx. 7 mm (±2 mm).

  • Particularly critical: if the floor rises within the swing area, functionality may be compromised prematurely.

Multifunctional XXL doors: What are the possibilities?

Many projects require more than only size. Typical requirements:

  • fire protection
  • sound insulation
  • Burglar resistance
  • Accessibility

An important principle applies here:

  • The maximum door size depends on the available test results and certifications.

Example:
A very large fire protection door is possible – but there may be restrictions in the combination with burglary resistance.

In practice,
this means: Priorities must be set – e.g. fire protection over burglary protection.

Door hinges: The key component in XXL doors

The load on the hinges increases with:

  • Door weight
  • Door width
  • Additional components (e.g. door closers)

Rule of thumb from practical experience:

  • +10% door width → +10% load
  • Door closer → +20–25% additional load
  • Door stop → up to a factor of 1.75

A third hinge can increase the load capacity by approx. 30%.

  • Important: Standard solutions quickly reach their limits here.


Door closers & accessibility

With oversized doors, traditional door closers often reach their limits.

Possible solutions:

  • Tandem door closers (greater power)
  • Automatically operating revolving door operators

However:

  • High closing forces can compromise accessibility.

Individual planning with producers is crucial here.

Fittings & handle sets: Often underestimated

The handle is the direct point of contact with the user – and is subject to heavy load.

For XXL doors, the following applies:

  • high powers when pulling/pushing
  • increased load on the lock and fittings

Recommendation:
Use security sets with a handle-plate and continuous screw fixing.

Erection: The key to success

Even the best plan is of little use without proper execution.

What matters:

  • precise erection (near-zero tolerance)
  • correct alignment
  • according to the requirements (often underestimated!)

Even minor defects can lead to functional problems in the long term.

Don’t forget maintenance

XXL doors are subjected to greater loads than standard doors.

Therefore:

  • schedule regular controls
  • short maintenance intervals
  • take early action if problems arise
