Kindergarten edge - what needs to be considered?

There are repeated demands for doors to be fitted with the kindergarten edge. The origin of this (justified) requirement comes from the accident prevention regulation for kindergartens and daycare centres, the so-called "DGUV Rule 102-002". It is published by the umbrella organisation of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV, www.dguv.de). The requirement can be found in various places:

  • To avoid the risk of injury, edges must have a rounding radius ≥ 2 mm or the edges must be broken/bevelled (corresponding to the rounding radius of ≥ 2 mm).
  • The instructions can be found in §9 Walls/columns, § 12 (2) Stairs and § 14 (2) Fittings.
  • Section 13 contains the specifications for doors (including avoidance of crushing and shearing points on secondary closing edges).
